The MacBook Pro with M2 Pro chip has a slower SSD than that of the older model.
According to some tests, the SSD mounted on the new MacBook Pro 2023 would be rather slower than that of the previous model released two years ago.
Who said that new (and more expensive) models are always better than their predecessors? The new MacBook Pro with the M2 Pro chip will certainly have a better processor, but we know at least one aspect of the new laptop that has undergone a major downgrade from the old generation: the SSD storage drive, which according to some reports is slower.
According to tests performed by specialist site 9to5Mac, the base 14-inch MacBook Pro M2 has a slower SSD than its predecessor. In the BlackMagic Disk Speed Test, the 512GB SSD in Apple’s new top model achieved read scores of around 2,970MB/s and write scores of around 3,150MB/s, compared to 4,900MB/s for read and to the 3,950MB/s write rate that the M1 Pro with a 512GB SSD was capable of.
This means that the base 2023 model has read and write speeds that are 39% and 20% slower, respectively. The reason for the difference is probably related to the chips. According to 9to5Mac, the 512GB SSD in the previous generation 14-inch MacBook Pro had four NAND storage chips, while the one in the M2 Pro appears to have just two.
With the same storage capacity, the SSD of the new MacBook Pro would therefore be significantly slower than the unit mounted on the 2021 model. This is definitely not good news. The new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro chip in Italy is offered at a starting price of €2,499.
