Game-services for existing franchises and commitment to single titles – Hermen Hulst on PlayStation plans

The head of PlayStation Studios, in a conversation with the Axios portal, spoke about the future plans of Sony’s gaming division, including service titles and especially single-player games, which fans have been worried about lately.

First of all, Hulst said that the games-services will be made both by existing in-house PlayStation studios and by recently acquired ones such as Haven Studios, headed by Jade Raymond.

At the same time, service titles will not always be created from scratch – some of them are based on existing franchises. Now we know at least about multiplayer games based on Horizon and The Last of Us.

As for singles, they’re not going anywhere. According to Hulst, these are still the highest-grossing titles in Sony’s portfolio.

Other details from the interview:

  • PS4 will not be abandoned – some games will be crossgen, but they will be decided separately for each title

  • The release of PlayStation exclusives on PC helps to invest more in sister studios and blockbuster development

  • Exclusives will be released on PC no earlier than a year after the release on the PlayStation

  • Games-services will be available on PC and PlayStation from day one

  • The Decima engine (Horizon, Death Stranding) is used by several studios in their games at once

Hulst said in an interview with Reuters this afternoon that PlayStation will continue to invest in PC and mobile to gain a foothold in those markets.
