We asked Turkish theologians: What is this Armageddon?

We asked theologians about US President Joe Biden’s “Armageddon” warning. Theologian Prof. Dr. Mehmet Evkuran said, “According to Christians, it is a war that will take place just before the apocalypse and is believed to engulf the whole world. The Doomsday will break out after this war.”

According to theologians, “ Armageddon ” is a very important concept in America, both theologically and politically. It is also one of the essential elements of a belief with a broad and organized base.

EVANGELIST BELIEF

prof. Dr. Ali Köse (Theologian):“Evangelical Christians, St. They believe that Jesus will come to earth, will fight the Antichrist, and that this war, called the ‘War of Judgment’, will take place at a place called Armageddon near Tel Aviv. Indeed, the fervent support of the Americans for Israel for years is based on this theological background. In addition, Evangelical Americans believe that since the 1970s, the apocalyptic war will be a nuclear war, and that the apocalyptic war will break with Russia because the counter nuclear power is in Russia. Already one of the Evangelical leaders, Pat Robertson, made a statement on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and said that this Putin would head to the Middle East after Ukraine, and this would start the ‘Apocalyptic War’ (Armageddon). He also cited the Torah. Therefore, the issue of Armageddon is not only a political issue, but also a religious issue…”

BATTLE BEFORE THE Apocalypse

prof. Dr. Mehmet Evkuran (Theologian): “According to Christians, it is a war that will take place just before the apocalypse and is believed to engulf the whole world. Doomsday will come after this war. Its political-theological base is strong. There are organized groups in America that produce policies in line with this belief. Its place in American political terminology is broad. It is also used as a symbol to legitimize some policies. It is an important motif. I don’t think President Biden used that term by accident. It is not a foreign rhetoric for those who know the subject and recognize the sensitivities of American society.”
