Mindy Kaling on Black Velma: Team Mystery is not defined by the whiteness of these characters, with the exception of Fred
Recently, HBO Max released the first trailer for the animated series Velma, dedicated to the adventures of members of the Mystery Corporation even before the events shown in the animated series about Scooby-Doo. The main “trick” of the show was its adult rating, as well as the fact that Velma is now a black girl of South Asian origin, Shaggy is African American, and Daphne is Asian.
Actress Mindy Kaling, who voiced Velma in the series, commented on the negative feedback from fans of the franchise:
I consider these characters iconic, but Mystery Inc. is by no means defined by their whiteness, with the exception of Fred. So I was a little surprised by the reaction of the fans. I think most Indian-American girls, seeing this skeptical, hard-working, kind of underappreciated heroine on screen, will finally be able to identify with her.
After such an answer, only one question remains – what is wrong with Fred?
Velma will release in 2023 on HBO Max.
