Overwatch 2 will not have loot boxes, Blizzard Activision changes strategy

Starting August 30, Blizzard will block the sale of loot boxes within its popular video game Overwatch . Any loot boxes still closed will be automatically exported to Overwatch 2 during the game release.

Overwatch 2 will be released on October 4, 2022 and, unlike its predecessor, it will be a free-to-play title. Blizzard also explained that the loot boxes purchased or obtained within the first chapter will not simply remain in the player’s inventory, but will be automatically opened at the first login on Overwatch 2.

With Overwatch 2, the company has decided to permanently move away from the loot box model. The new chapter will introduce an important and radical change to the game economy: no longer a loot box but a store where users can freely decide which skins or digital items to buy, without random elements. The pivot of Overwatch 2 monetization, however, will rest on the sale of Battle Passes .

At launch, Overwatch 2 players will only find the P2P multiplayer mode, while the awaited PvE campaign will only be introduced at a later time. Overwatch 2 will be available starting October 4 on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, PC, PS5, PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
