Saudi Arabia-Greece rapprochement: Crown Prince in Athens
Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has traveled to Greece to sign a number of agreements, including in the energy and telecommunications sectors.
Arriving in Athens with a large delegation, which includes names from the Saudi business world, Selman was welcomed with an official ceremony by Greek Prime Minister Kiriakos Mitsotakis. The visit marks Prince Selman’s first trip to a European Union country since the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul in 2018. The visit reflects the developing relationship between Riyadh and Athens in recent years.
COOPERATION IN ENERGY
Before the meeting between delegations, Mitsotakis said that the visit “is an opportunity to strengthen strategic relations”, while Prince Selman said, “We are interested in making Greece a center for Europe in terms of hydrogen. “This changes the rules of the game for both countries,” he said. The two countries also signed a preliminary agreement in May for the project to build a data line that will cross the Mediterranean Sea and connect Europe and Asia. This agreement is expected to be finalized during the visit.
