‘Turkey has undertaken a greater burden than Germany’
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was deemed worthy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ 2022 Nansen Refugee Award on the grounds that Germany opened its doors in 2015-16 and received 1.2 million Syrian refugees, received the award at a ceremony held in Geneva the previous day.
Merkel, who received her award from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, also pointed to the important role Turkey has undertaken in the Refugee Crisis. Merkel stated that Turkey assumed a greater burden than Germany in this process and said, “Many Refugees did not want to go too far from their homeland. That’s why Turkey hosted 3.8 million refugees from the Middle East.”

The Nansen Regional Refugee Awards also found their owners. Merkel, who did not receive the 150 thousand dollar prize money, wanted this money to be distributed to the regional refugee award winners who were entitled to 50 thousand Dollars Each . African award goes to Mbera Fire Brigade, the refugee who extinguished more than 100 forest fires in Mauritania, the Americas award goes to Vincenta Gonzalez, who has served refugees in Costa Rica for more than 50 years, and the Asian award is Meikswe, who helped many displaced civilians in Myanmar. The Middle East award goes to Dr. Myanmar, who provided medical aid to women fleeing DAESH in Iraq. Presented to Nagham Hasan.
