American women’s basketball league player Griner, who played for the Phoenix Mercury basketball team, was arrested on February 17 on drug trafficking charges at the Moscow airport for having cannabis oil on him. Griner argued in court that cannabis oil was prescribed by his doctors to relieve his pain after workouts.

The Biden administration is offering to give Russian gun lord Viktor Bout in exchange for the release of Griner and retired soldier Paul Whelan, who is imprisoned in Russia.
